Prejudice is negative feelings for someone or a group of people, its discriminating them because of the group that they are associated with. Some forms of prejudice includes racism, sexism, and homophobia.


The victims of prejudice are affected way more than the one who is being prejudice. It affects them mentally, physically, and socially. Prejudice is almost always based off stereotypes and when someone forms opinions off of stereotypes they are discriminating against them. One form of prejudice is racism. Its when someone makes negative comments or facial expressions at them because they are a different race then you. African Americans are the one race that gets discriminated against the most and is the race that we think of when the word racism comes to mind.


African Americans get prejudice comments because some people are still in the mindset that they are beneath them and think very little of them. This reason is because they were once used as slaves. Usually with racism people are degraded with prejudice words and actions. Lennie Small and George Milton, a pair of bindlestiffs, witness the discrimination throughout the course of the novel.


The characters in the story are faced with internal and external conflicts. These are shown for the duration of the text, supporting the theme: prejudice and discrimination can cause isolation.


Steinbeck develops this theme through the literary elements, characterization, conflict and imagery. In the middle of the novel, Lennie unsolicitedly visits Crooks secluded shack. Indirect characterization of Crooks is apparent while discussing the discrimination issues with Lennie. Crooks broods over his life, explaining how he is unable to participate in social tasks, such as playing cards, due to his race.
